Upward is a faith based sports league open to boys and girls starting at age 5 (age 4 for soccer) through 8th grade. Upward originated in Spartanburg, SC in 1995 and has spread throughout the country and now has leagues worldwide. There are more than 500,000 children nationwide that participate in Upward.
Upward emphasizes healthy competition, skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, effort, and character instead of a “win at all costs” mentality associated found in many sports leagues. Upward provides first class, organized and detailed sports programming in basketball, soccer, cheerleading, and flag football.
Unique aspects of Upward include an evaluation system that promotes equal and competitive teams as well as a substitution system which allows for equal playing time for all participants. Through Upward, children are exposed to quality coaching and sport development.
Walnut Creek Upward (hosted by Walnut Creek Community Church) is one of 3 churches in the Des Moines area that host an Upward League. Valley Church and Westchestrer Church also conduct Upward Sports leagues. The majority of the leagues participates are from Des Moines, West Des Moines, Johnston, and Urbandale.
Our drafting system allows for the seasoned veteran and also the first timer. Teams are divided equally so games are fun and competitive for all participates.
Sports are a great way for children to learn about teamwork, respect for authority and sportsmanship. The sad part is all those things are being lost in today’s sporting society. With an Upward sport, these key essentials are included to create the best sporting experience for every child that participates. Each Upward Sport is designed to reveal the winner in every child. Every child plays. Every child learns. Every child IS a Winner!
Come be apart of a growing, positive, and fun sports league where Every Child is a Winner!
